Announcing MAGNETIC:FIELDS

I’ve been thinking about polarity in society, especially in Minnesota, a state often described as “politically purple.”

There’s a fine line between red and blue—frequently mapped onto rural versus urban—shaping the divide between Republican- and Democrat-leaning voters.

I think about magnets as a metaphor: opposing forces that can repel, but also snap together.

I created this work in Minneapolis in the aftermath of the shootings of Renee Macklin Good on January 7 and Alex Pretti on January 24, 2026.

MAGNETIC:FIELDS artist book features 31 color photographs across 48 pages, with magnetic panels integrated into the book. Each copy includes an original silver gelatin chemigram made at Badwater Basin in Death Valley during the March 2026 superbloom—described by scientists as a once-in-a-decade event.

The design, layout, essay, and photographs come directly from my practice. I printed and bound the edition in Minneapolis using archival materials. The work is produced in an edition of 25, plus six artist proofs (A–F), for a total of 31 copies.
