MAGNETIC:FIELDS artist book

Coming soon: MAGNETIC:FIELDS, an artist book born from chemigrams.

The beginning of a project takes many forms—a yin and yang of thrill and doubt. Hands-on joy and screen-bound monotony. The uncertainty of piddling in the darkroom, the small glees of discovery and repetition, that moment the prints hit the final rinse (I always wish they could keep that “wet look” forever). Then the next morning, dry and furled, pressed flat again and again—before photographing 168 cameraless silver gelatin chemigrams (isn’t it ironic?).

Next comes the unglamorous work: dust removal, color correction, straightening, cropping… all before the fun part—editing, sequencing, and experimenting with new printing and binding techniques.

I’m usually hesitant to share work that’s still fresh, not quite fully baked. But I’ve learned that when I want to share, it means the piece has been simmering long enough. The initial thrill fades, doubt creeps in—that’s my cue to show the work and push it toward the finish line.

MAGNETIC:FIELDS draws from 31 unique 8×10 inch silver gelatin chemigrams made in Minneapolis in January 2026. The project will take form as a limited artist book—25 copies plus six Artist Proofs (A–F), for a total edition of 31 released in the next few weeks.
