The Carver County Historical Society hosts The Unchosen Ones touring exhibition November 22, 2024 to January 10, 2025. I stopped in today to view the exhibition and talk with the staff and enjoyed my time in Waconia, Minnesota a short drive from Minneapolis. Several youth from the project were from Carver County, and the fairgrounds where I began principle photography in 2016 was a few blocks away. This was the first venue that hung the portraits from the ceiling and I thought it made good use of the space— I give this curatorial and installation freedom to all my venues, since they know their space and audience best. Thank you to Wendy Petersen Biorn, Jeremy Murray, and Jayna Hulleman for your support!
Minnesota Tamil Sangam Portraits | MSP Exhibition
For the next year, my portraits of artists from the Minnesota Tamil Sangam will be on exhibition at the Minneapolis-St.Paul airport. The artists celebrated in the portrait are Aditya Nandhiyar, Kamatchi Sureshkumar, Manigandan Jayaraman, Nirmal Sundhar, Prasanna Gajavarathan, Rohini Balamurugan, Sanjay Govindasamy, Saravanan Durairajan, Shanker Narayan, Tamil Kadir Rajavel, Trisha Sebastin, Velmurugan Marimuthu, Vijaya manikandan Mohana Vijayan, and Vijayalakshmi Sridhar.
The series was inspired by "the inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny” metaphor shared by Martin Luther King Jr. Blue fabric connects each artist, flowing like a river of color and honoring “wakpa,” the Dakota word for “river.” Traditional Tamil community performances occur by the river edge, and flowing blue fabric remains meaningful and symbolic.

Walker Art Center {Acquisition}
World-class contemporary art center in Minneapolis, MN acquired The Best of the Best and Dumber and Dumb artists books today as part of the Rosemary Furtak Artist Book Collection, honoring the memory of Ralph Burnet and the support of Jennifer Phelps.
The Walker Art Center is home to the first artist book collection for a museum library, founded by the visionary Rosemary Furtak. She believed these unique creations deserve to be experienced in person, not tucked away in a vault.
It was a profound moment to hand off my work alongside Peggy Burnet and my longtime gallery director, Jennifer Phelps to John Lyon and the wonderful staff.

Announcing DUMBER and DUMB (2024)
In Dumber and Dumb, R. J. Kern intertwines themes of commemoration with his ongoing meditation on home, ancestry, and a sense of place. This artist book honors the message, "A reminder to cherish joy anew, in times when laughter feels askew," coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the American buddy comedy Dumb and Dumber, which debuted on December 6, 1994. Through this work, Kern celebrates the film’s milestone while also delving into creative methods of storytelling using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Kern developed an AI image generator model using photographs sourced from his first monograph, The Sheep and the Goats (Kehrer Verlag, 2017). The model was executed using the free platform Openart.ai, resulting in the creation of the image Dumber and Dumb, 2024. Kern then produced the negative needed to create a salt print employing traditional 19th-century photographic techniques.
The earliest photographs often featured animals, particularly during the rise of animal contests in the mid-19th century. Horses, cattle, goats, and sheep frequently appeared in these pioneering images, reflecting a significant moment in photography's history.
In this work, Kern pays tribute to the origins of both photography and animal contests through the salt print process. He also celebrates the charm of everyday humor and the meaningful connections we draw from our interactions with animals.
This narrative is further enriched by a photograph published in National Geographic magazine in November 2017, depicting a young Minnesota 4-H participant alongside his goat, affectionately named "Dumb." A subsequent exploration in the pasture revealed another goat sharing the same name, leading to the amusing duo, Dumb and Dumber, 2017.
The three-panel folio book is 10.25 inches wide by 8.25 inches high (33 inches when open) and contains two salted paper prints signed verso, varnished with white beeswax and lavender oil— accompanied by a limerick written by the artist honoring his Irish ancestry. Kern made the folio using book board with archival materials and processes in his Minneapolis studio.
Dumber and Dumb is an edition of thirty copies numbered 1-30. Six artist proofs lettered A-F.

Phase One XC40 Review In Iceland
It’s not often I write photography gear reviews. However, in this case I couldn’t refuse!
I test out the Phase One XC40 loaned to me and I share my experience in this post >>
The XC 40 encouraged me to create more photographs than I anticipated—an undeniable win. Its simplicity played a massive role in this.
Critical Mass Top 50 {2024}
I’m honored The Last Fair project was awarded Critical Mass Top 50 (award winners here >>). Foodies: this is like the James Beard Chef award in the post-documentary photo project world. I appreciate the 150+ jurors for sharing their time, energy, and enthusiasm for photography. I couldn’t have done this project without the trust of the Minnesota 4-H youth and their families.
Inspired by the cancellation of the Ramsey County Fair in 2021, I launched the project, visiting 25 county fairs across Minnesota over three summers. During this journey, I spent 70 nights away from home and drove 9500 miles, reflecting on how we often don’t appreciate joy until it’s gone.
Each large group photograph requires extensive planning and engagement with participants through workshops, presentations, and exhibitions. As rural youth experience a generational shift, with aging farmers retiring and fewer young people entering agriculture, my work aims to highlight the importance of these fairs in fostering community and agricultural traditions. These issues have driven my artistic endeavors since 2012.

Grant Recipient | Puffin Foundation
I received my first grant from the Puffin Foundation to present a community engagement program and exhibition of photography in collaboration with the Gizhiigin Arts Incubator on the White Earth Ojibwe Reservation in Mahnomen, MN. Programming details will be finalized Spring 2025. The grant will increase awareness and visibility of my work and will also shine a light on the life and work of people in the Minnesota. Meeting new people in these communities allows for genuine exchanges between me and my subjects as we collaborate together to create photographs reflecting their lived reality.

113th Fine Arts Exhibition {Minnesota State Fair}
The “Great Minnesota Get Together” aka the Minnesota State Fair, remains a special place in my heart since my wife brought me there on a date in 2011. I’m proud to be apart of the largest fine art exhibition in Minnesota in 2024, the 113th Fine Arts Exhibition with Juror Brett Kallusky (photography). I appreciate the support of Brett Kallusky for his time and energy in jurying the largest exhibition in the state. Also, special thanks to Jim Ross for the framing (Ross Frame Shop).
This photograph remains special to me, as it is the same county fair which served as the summer highlight for my mother-in-law. The Mahnomen County fair remains the oldest and smallest county fair in Minnesota, and the barn pictured was designed by Cass Gilbert, the same architect as the Minnesota Capitol building in Saint Paul.
After weeks of planning, a mural-sized photograph was produced on June 30, 2023 at the Mahnomen County Fair— a summer highlight for many agricultural youth in the region. This photograph included over 75 participants from the community— including over a 25 members of the White Earth Nation— which agreed to serve as reciprocal, active participants in the photographic process.
Juror's Statement:
"I spent nine hours reviewing 939 submissions with the task of narrowing them down to 112 accepted works. When reviewing the submitted photographs for the MN State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition I found it relatively easy to pick the strongest, initially. Those were photographs with thoughtful compositions, excellent technical skills in terms of color balance or tonal range, lighting, and compelling content. It was relatively easy to reject the works that lacked those qualities too. I spent the most time digging into the last 40 accepted photographs.”
About The Last Fair series
After the Ramsey County Fair in St. Paul, Minnesota was canceled in 2021, I asked fairgoers at other fairs what they would miss most if it were their last year. A common response was the 4-H animal shows, highlighting deep-rooted connections between communities and agriculture.
Rural communities in the U.S. are undergoing significant transformations, with the number of retiring farmers increasing while new farmers are on the decline in Minnesota. As a parent, I am troubled by what this means for the next generation’s understanding of farms, sustainability, and stewardship of the land, especially in the face of climate change. These worries, coupled with the dwindling interest in agriculture among children, motivate my artistic endeavors.
The shift from small family farms to large monoculture operations has had a profound effect on rural America, with county fairs being one of the casualties. Once a vibrant showcase of diverse livestock, some county fairs now see sparse entries in competitions once fierce. Despite diminishing appeal of county fairs to today's youth, these events remain crucial in passing on life lessons and agricultural traditions.
Drawing inspiration from the works of Dutch painter Pieter Bruegel and American folk artist Grandma Moses, I use a large format camera and studio lighting to capture the essence of contemporary agrarian practices at these remaining country fairs. Through the lens of “in-camera photography,” I aim to shed light on the evolving face of American farming and the importance of preserving its heritage.

Waseca County Pioneer {Feature}
Thank you to Deb Bently for attending my shows at Waseca County fair and writing her article, “Photographer R. J. Kern records rural fair culture,” in the Waseca County Pioneer, page 14, July 19. After the feature was published in the weekly newspaper (yes, an actual newspaper in 2024!), she called and asked for my mailing address to mail me two copies. How sweet! Proof of engaging “underserved audiences” remains an important part of grant funding by the Minnesota State Arts Board (Creative Support for Artists), which supported my efforts to attend the fair as well as the Waseca County Agricultural Society. I’m grateful for the support.

The CPAC permanent collection contains more than 800 prints donated by 180 photographers, a resource for the Colorado community to view, study, and learn about nuances of fine art photography.
KSTP / ABC Twin Cities Live (featured work)
It's always a great feeling to have your work showcased on a platform like television, especially when it's done by someone as skilled and dedicated as Margot Rosenstein (gallery director at Veronique Wantz Gallery). It's clear that she and the team at Veronique Wantz Gallery are passionate about promoting and supporting artists they represent. Margot appeared on KSTP Twin Cities Live with Elizabeth Ries and Kristin Haubrich on June 13 and featured my work along with Wendy Westlake and Jim Hillegass. View the segment below:
Being in front of the camera, especially on live TV, can be nerve-wracking. I’m appreciative to work with a gallery like Veronique Wantz Gallery that supports and promotes my work in such a public way, allowing my art to reach a wider audience. I love having advocates like Margot Rosenstein and Joanne Jaensch-Rosenstein (Gallery Consultant) who believe in talent and are willing to showcase it to the world. Keep creating and shining bright!
Featured photographs by R. J. Kern include: Dumb and Dumber, Freeborn County, MN (2016), Counting Sheep, Hennepin County, MN (2017), and Live Action Role Players, Blue Earth County Fair, Minnesota (2022), archival pigment prints, 20 x 24 inches, edition of 10 + 2AP.
2024 Summer County Fair Lineup
TheMinnesota State Arts Board (MSAB) awarded me a FY2024 Creative Support for Individuals Grant for $10,000. I am especially grateful for the support.
I look forward to engaging with county fairs across greater Minnesota through agricultural photography exhibitions, storytelling experiences, and tintype demonstrations. Each time I photograph at county fairs, my project continues to grow and evolve, largely because of the interactions I have with the subjects of my photos and participants that attend my workshops and exhibitions.
I hope to see you at the fair!

fotoMAGAZIN feature
On German newstands: a feature in fotoMAGAZIN with essay by Manfred Zollner. I’m feeling grateful for this outcome from Fotofest Meeting Place 2024. My son loved finding his likeness in this “Where’s Waldo” world.
Excerpt (translated):
“THE VILLAGE IDYLL DISAPPEARS
The American "County Fair" is today a curious mixture of regional agricultural fair, village fair, performance show of local animal breeders and beer tent marquees. A place where heavy-weight giant rabbits, cattle and sheep are awarded with colorful pennants, children are plucked on cotton candy with sticky fingers and teenagers cheer the "Demolition Derby". At the County Fair, a remnant of that picture can still be seen that the painter Norman Rockwell painted on canvas throughout his life as a healing world version of the USA. However, the future of the County Fairs seems questionable.
The everyday life of the US large farms is today light years away from that farm idyll of the legendary TV series "Our Little Farm" from the 1970s.”
Artist Talk {Blanden Art Museum}
I cringe at the thought of me on video… especially giving an artist talk. However, I realize for everyone I photograph, they are equally as vulnerable. I share my heart and inspiration and answer lots of audience questions behind my work in this live artist talk recorded on May 4, 2024 (Star Wars Fans: “May the 4th Be With You”) at the Blanden Art Museum in Fort Dodge, Iowa. No Holds Barred.
